Keeping your family/friends safe

NEVER SAY NEVER

Pet owners love their pets. They also think they know them. And that just may not be the case. Everyone needs to remember that pets are animals. Don't get me wrong, I have 2 dogs and 3 birds of my own. I have a fairly good idea of how they will react in most situations. What we can't know or predict is exactly what is going on in their minds.

For reasons unknown they can and do growl/snap, scratch and bite. Maybe they're just feeling a bit under the weather, maybe they are in pain or just in a bad mood, who knows. I often wonder if like us humans there are just some people that 'rub them the wrong way' and they simply don't like them.

KEEP SHOTS CURRENT

If your going to have a pet, make sure you keep current on their shots, especially Rabies. I can't stress enough how important this is. Not only for your pets well being but for everyone your pet comes in contact with.  Contact your local Animal Control to find out what is required in your area.  You might also find out what the procedure will be if your pet ever does bite someone.

WHEN THE UNTHINKABLE HAPPENS

Your pet (usually a dog) bites someone. If the skin of the victim is broken, the pet owner has to prove that the animal is current on shots. Bites that break the skin need be seen by a Doctor. Depending on the severity of the bite either at the Doctors office or in the ER. It also will be reported to either the Police or Animal Control. Pet owners, contact your Insurance if you have Home Owners. In most cases your policy covers bites. If you are a renter, consider getting some insurance that cover bites. I know it may sound a bit 'over the top' but if your pet should ever bite and cause serious injury you'll be very glad you have it.

ENJOY THEM

Pets are a great joy to have around. They lift our spirits when we're down and can makes us laugh. Keeping them happy and healthy goes along way in insuring that you have many happy years together.
